Handbook Description

This course emphasizes communicative language teaching. Specific methods and approaches to be explained include grammar translation, audio- lingual method, total physical responses, natural approach, language experience approach, literature-based approach, phonics, whole language, community language learning, Suggestopedia, Silent Way, cognitive academic language learning, content- and theme-based instruction and computer-assisted language learning.

My Reflection:

I found this course really interesting. often, when we teach, we use a multitude of different styles and techniques without ever giving a thought to the origin of the methodology. This course allowed the opportunity to experiment in more detail with the execution of particular methodological approaches to teaching, their pro’s, cons and individual techniques. I liked the combined teaching approach of the Professor’s Carkin and Kelly, and felt the differences in their own teaching styles and expectations supported the nature of the course itself.
